How are class sizes determined?

True or False?  Limits to the size of classes are determined by the administration in accordance with the financial needs of the university.

False.  Art. 5.17.2 covers class size limits.  The size of classes cannot be arbitrary or based on economic considerations alone, but must be “be determined on sound educational principles.”  In addition, when Academic Deans set limits to classes, they cannot do so on their own, but must work “in consultation with the department or interdisciplinary program.”  Classes of more than 40 students are possible, but they require additional load credit compensation for the faculty member “to insure increased instructor time to meet student needs.”  This compensation is outlined in Art. 10.3.
